VaultX is a REST API for sharing text, code snippets, and links between devices without creating an account. Shared items can expire, have view limits, or require a password.

I wanted a simple way to move a snippet or temporary piece of text between devices without creating an account or leaving it online indefinitely.

Memory + Redis
hybrid storage with failover
Challenge
The main backend challenge was keeping shared items accessible while handling Redis outages and server restarts.
Action
Hybrid in-memory + Redis storage architecture
Reads check memory first and fall back to Redis when needed. I added failover so the API can continue using in-memory storage if Redis is unavailable, with the trade-off that memory-only data may not survive a restart.
Security and rate limiting
I added Helmet security headers, bcrypt password hashing, Zod input validation, a 100 KB content limit, CORS configuration, and cleanup for expired items.
Consistent API design & monitoring
I standardized JSON error responses, added health-check endpoints and access tracking, and used Node’s crypto utilities to generate tokens.
Result
VaultX gave me a chance to work through backend concerns like Redis failover, validation, expiry, and predictable API errors.
